American Expressionist Master
Mr. DeTrolio is a graduate of Rutgers University and a New Jersey native, born in Newark and currently living at the New Jersey shore.
His work is published as limited edition prints and signed open edition prints. His originals are collected nationally and internationally with pieces in the collection of such notables as Francis Ford Coppolla, noted director and producer, and Fred Koch, strength coach for the 2006 Norwegian Biathlon Team. The artist works on linen and prepares his canvas in the manner of the old masters, using a glue sizing and a lead based oil primer for maximum color retention and archival stability. His primary paint is Blockx, considered by many to be the finest in the world. Old Holland is used for those colors not available from Blockx.
Mr. DeTrolio is a dedicated painter who makes no concessions to trends of niche painting and is equally at home in all genres, and indeed, is one of the few contemporary masters whose work is being collected in each of the major genres: portraits, landscapes, figures, still life and dance.
His passion for his work is obvious upon viewing and the words below will serve as additional testimony to the intense nature of a man who refuses to stand before an easel with less than the full measure of his passion.
From the Painters Pen
I stared into the mirror and the image that stared back at me was a face filled with anxious pain and yearning eyes. I thought, I must paint this face, for surely it is the face of true art, a depiction of the agony of creativity, the sting of anonymity, the relentless insistence for integrity and honesty. So, paint it I did. Then and many times since, I have recreated it, in and amongst the myriad of still life's, landscapes and figure studies.
For untold years I have repeatedly returned to that image, an image form which I cannot detach myself, nor do I wish to, for it is in that visage that I see over and over the truth. It is in those eyes, that bear witness to an angry determination to paint the truth regardless of the cost, that I see my soul, and the soul, of any who dare use the word painter to describe themselves. It is in those eyes that I see what once was, is not now, but can be again. It is in those eyes that I see reflected the passion for life, line and color, without which art will surely die.
